J. J. DiBenedetto and his story, Dream Vacation stop by Penny's Tales

Blurb for Dream Vacation (book 8 in the Dream Series)

Thanks to her unique ability to step into other people's dreams, Dr. Sara Alderson has solved murders, unraveled conspiracies and saved lives. But when a crisis hits close to home, even her supernatural gift might not be enough to avert disaster.
On a family vacation to Paris, Sara's fifteen-year-old daughter Grace disappears without a trace. The only way to find her is through Sara's dreams. But her gift has taken an unwanted vacation, and without it, Sara has no idea how to rescue Grace. In a foreign city, with no clues, and her dreaming talent failing her for the first time, Sara must figure out another way to find Grace before it's too late.
Dream Vacation is the eighth book of the Dream Series

Excerpt
Sara is somewhere high up, looking down over Paris. The Eiffel Tower – there’s nowhere else this could be. She wonders whose dream it is, and then she sees the girl.

Blonde, young – a high schooler. Hair down to her – Sara has to blink, look away, look again. Hair in a ponytail all the way down her back, and then curled up around her until Sara can’t see where it ends. It’s a dream, she reminds herself, not questioning what she’s seeing. It doesn’t have to make sense.

She’s seen this girl before, but where? The memory comes back almost immediately – last night, in another dream. She was on the plane. And here she is, and the boy, too. Definitely her brother.
Sara watches as the siblings peer far below to the ground, looking for something – or someone. After a while, the girl lets out a little shout. “There! In the blue! Do you see?” The boy follows her finger, pointing hundreds of feet down. “I knew we’d find him again. We’ve got the money, we just need to get down to him now.”

And then the girl burrows into the endless tangle of her hair, pulls up what looks like it actually is the end, and Sara has to laugh; now she understands the hair. She remembers this fairy tale from her childhood. The girl begins to tie her hair to one of the girders. She ties a double-knot, then pulls on it, hard. The knot doesn’t slip.

Ready, Jamie?” The boy nods, and throws his arms around her neck. She takes hold of her hair about halfway down her back, and, in one fluid motion, leaps off the Tower.
Sara knows what to expect now; she isn’t even surprised when she looks over the edge to find the girl rappelling down the tower a few bouncy steps at a time…

About the Dream Series
What if you could see everyone else’s dreams? That’s the question Sara has to wrestle with in the Dream Series. We first meet her as a shy, bookish college student who doesn’t think there’s anything extraordinary about herself. And then the dreams start…
Over the course of the series, Sara learns to live with these supernatural dreams and all the trouble they plunge her into. At the same time, she grows from a student to a practicing doctor; and from a single girl to a wife and mother. But every time she thinks she’s got everything figured out, life – and her extraordinary dreams – teach her that she’s always got more to learn…

Sasq-WHAT?

Sasq-what?

She was coming. Dark thunderclouds hid the sun as he crouched lower behind the bushes. He knew she wouldn’t see or hear him.  Wind whistled through tall pine trees covering any sounds he might have made.  He waited as she neared.  She was almost there.  He held his breath, getting ready.
Her scream split the air like a knife when his hand shot out and grabbed her ankle.  She fell back on her rear, scrambling backwards frantically trying to escape.
His hysterical laughter turned his sister’s fear to instant rage.  “You should have seen your face!” the boy gasped between peels of laughter.  Andy was a ten-year-old pain in his sister’s butt.
“You are dead!” Kelly growled, pushing her long auburn hair out of her eyes.  She was two years older than Andy, but only a few inches taller.  Hazel eyes shot promises of pain into laughing brown ones.  Kelly jumped at Andy.  He zigged the other way.  She stayed after him, determined to do him bodily harm.  Andy’s laughter slowed
him down.  He made an exaggerated look of fright and screamed, pretending to be her.  His Yankee’s baseball cap sat crooked on his head, a small leafy branch from some bush stuck in his shaggy, dark brown hair.
Kelly giggled and then burst into laughter.  She jumped on top of him, tackling him to the ground.  “Can you be any more of a nerd?” she asked.
They both heard it.  A shrill, high pitched scream filled the air. The echo making it impossible to figure out which direction it had come from.  Birds, leaving the safety of the huge pines, flew in every direction as if escaping the danger that was on its way.  Slowly, they got to their feet.  “What was that?” Andy whispered.
Kelly shook her head saying nothing, goose bumps covering her body, “Let’s get back to camp,” she said.   They ran, constantly looking over their shoulders.  The further they ran the thicker the forest became, closing in on them.  “I think we’re going the wrong way.  I don’t recognize anything around here!”  Kelly whispered to her brother in a panic.
“We passed that big dead stump,” he replied, unconcerned, pointing down the road.  “That scream was not human.  You know what I think it was?” Andy’s eyes glittered with excitement.
“No,” Kelly responded, a warning dripped from her words, “and I don’t want to know either!  Let’s go!”  She grabbed her brother’s arm, pulling him in the direction of the dead tree.  He tried to pull out of her grasp, but her death grip wouldn’t be broken.  “I’m sure it’s this way,” Kelly said, dragging him behind her.
They walked what seemed like miles.  Clouds were getting darker and the wind
was picking up.  Trees were all they could see no matter which direction they looked.  The sky bubbled with black, angry clouds. Thunder cracked, making them jump. “We’re lost,” Kelly cried, eyes tearing up.
“Don’t cry, Kelly.  We’ll find the campsite.”  Andy said, nervously. “It’s probably right over that…”  He stopped talking and looked around sniffing the air.  “Man oh man, something stinks!  Can you smell that?”  Andy asked.  Kelly nodded, wrinkling her nose.
They came to a small clearing.  The smell was over powering. Kelly covered her mouth with her hand at the sight. The ground was littered with bones and half eaten carcasses with skin still attached.
“What’s that up there?”  Andy asked, pointing to a high branch in the tree.  They went closer to get a better look.   Both kids took a step backward. Flies covered a small animal of some sort had been thrown up there, blood still dripping from where it had been ripped in half.
“Oh,” Kelly whimpered, running out of the trees. “I’m going to be sick!  What would have done that?”  Kelly looked around, eyes full of fear.  “We are lost!  It’s almost dark and there is some….something out there!  Mom!  Dad!”  Kelly was screaming now.
“Kelly,” Andy yelled into her face, “look over there.  There’s a house or something!”
Kelly saw what her brother was pointing and took off running, with Andy close behind.  It wasn’t a house at all, but an old, rickety shack.  The wood was bug eaten, with big gaps in the wood, allowing them to peek inside.  The front door was held on by a single hinge and rotten shutters were the only thing that kept animals from climbing in the windows.
Lightening slashed through the sky and a loud clap of thunder boomed overhead.  Both Andy and Kelly jumped and ran to push their way through the front door.  Once inside, they propped the door closed, hoping the single hinge and an old metal chair would hold the door closed against the wind.
The floor of the shack was made of cement.  A huge crack snaked from one end of the room to the other, allowing weeds to pop up.  The floor was covered in dirt and dead pine needles.  Two cabinets were on one of the walls, one hanging at a crooked angle, held by a single nail.  The doors were so warped they wouldn’t shut.  Beneath the cabinets was a small table with a single drawer.  The only other furniture was a table that leaned against another wall because one of the legs was missing and the metal chair they had used to keep the front door shut.  In another corner was what looked to be the remains of a mattress.  Most of the material was in shreds and the stuffing was all but gone.
“Probably mice,” Andy said, nodding toward the mattress.
“Perfect,” Kelly said.  “We are guests of Mickey’s Mice Motel.”
Andy rummaged through the drawer.  “Look!” he called.  “Here are some old candles and matches.  It’s going to be dark soon, ya know.”
“Thanks for that news alert, Dude,” she responded sarcastically.
“Just saying.  Now we won’t have to sit in the dark.”  He turned to open the door of the crooked cupboard on the wall.  It was stuck and when he pulled it, the whole thing came crashing to the floor.  A yelp came from Kelly, jumping back.
Smiling broadly, Andy held up two dust covered cans and an old rusty can opener.  “Peaches!”
The sun would be down soon and the shack was getting dark.  Kelly hurried to light all the candles, which didn’t put out much light.  The storm was getting louder.  They could feel the wind blowing through some of the boards of the old shack.  Thunder cracked and then rain pounded the roof, leaking in the corner by the mattress.  “It’s raining,” Andy announced.
“Of course it’s raining,” Kelly said. “It always storms before the murders begin.”
Laughing Andy gave his sister a can of peaches. Using their fingers they ate in silence.  “I’ll bet mom and dad are freaking out,” Kelly said.
“Yea, but they’ll be so glad to see us tomorrow; they will forget to be mad!” Andy said.
            “Yea, right,” Kelly responded dryly.
They finished their dinner and threw the cans in the corner.  “I think that scream was a Sasquatch,” Andy burst out.
            “Sasq-what?”
“Sasquatch, you know, Big Foot.  I read where they have been seen in the Pacific Northwest.   They are like half human and half hairy monster type things.
“Andy, be quiet!  I mean it!  I don’t need to hear this now.”  Kelly yelled, her voice trembling.
They were sitting against the wall when a flash of lightening lit up the shack.  Kelly screamed and pointed toward the back wall.  “There was something outside.  I saw it.”
“What was it?”  Andy gasped.  He tried to get up but she held him tight.
“I don’t know.  It looked, it looked……huge.  I swear there was something there.”  Kelly whispered, shivering.
At that moment the front door burst open sending the metal chair flying across the floor. A light blinded both kids.  “Kelly! Andy!” It was Mom.
“Mom!  Dad!”  The two kids were across the room and in their parents’ arms.  Both were talking at once.  Kelly was blaming Andy and Andy was telling them about the Sasquatch.
That caught dad’s attention, “The what?”
He told his parents about the scream, the dead thing up in the tree, and what Kelly thought she had seen just before they came in.
“It was probably some owl’s dinner and he put it there for safe keeping,” Dad said.
“No way, Dad,” Andy argued. “It was gross, like something had ripped it in two and what about all the bones that were left there.  It was like the Sasquatch’s personal dining area. And then there was that really horrible scream we heard?”
“That’s enough Andy.  You’re scaring Kelly, plus I’m not too crazy about this whole conversation, either!” his mother said.
Andy’s dad agreed.  “Look, it’s raining pretty hard outside.  Why don’t we sleep here tonight and get an early start tomorrow.”  Everybody agreed with that idea. With mom and dad close by, Andy and Kelly curled up against them and went right to sleep.
The next morning the whole family woke up to the sun shining through the gaps.
The sky was blue and there was a light breeze.
Right outside the door, Kelly and Andy stopped and stared at the muddy ground.  There were tracks.  Foot long tracks with claws that dug deep into the mud.  They started under one of the windows and trailed into the forest.
All four of them were out of breath by the time they reached the campground.  The tent was down and the truck was loaded within the hour.
“Do you think they were Sasquatch tracks?” Andy asked as the truck’s engine gunned to life.
“No!” Mom, Dad, and Kelly replied, overly loud.
“Me, too,” Andy said, looking at the forest as they drove out of the campground.

Wystan (The Heckmasters) by Allison Merritt

About the Book:
Title: Wystan (The Heckmasters)
Length: 228 pages
Pubisher: Samhain Publishing
Publication date: October 21, 2014

Blurb:
Her search for safety lands her in a totally new kind of danger.

The Heckmasters, Book 1

Certain that an ad for a job in a small New Mexico Territory town is the answer to her prayers, Nebraska schoolteacher Rhia Duke packs her sister into a rickety wagon and heads west.

Except when they reach the near-deserted town, she learns the truth. There is no job, no future, and no welcome in the bleak blue eyes of the handsome sheriff.

The minute Rhia’s runaway team thunders into town, Wystan Heckmaster feels the change in the air. One of three sons of a demon who dared love a human, he keeps watch over a Pit guarded by seven seals, and slays any Hellbound demon that attempts to free the master imprisoned within.

With a gut full of regret and a forgotten town filled with reformed demons, Wystan is certain of one thing: he can’t be the man Rhia needs. But when the truth behind Rhia’s flight from Nebraska comes to light, Wystan must open his soul—and pray there’s enough love between them to overcome the darkness rising from the Pit.

Warning: Contains a take-no-prisoners sheriff, a woman who can’t outrun her supernatural secrets, and a dusty town where hope is as thin as dust in the wind. Author recommends keeping a glass of cool spring water at your elbow while reading.

Excerpt:
Something changed in the air the moment the wagon crossed the town’s border. Too
early to be a supply train, and there was no way in hell it was visitors. Berner didn’t host
town fairs, theatre troupes, peddlers, or bible thumpers.
Wystan Heckmaster slapped his battered Stetson on his head, collected the keys to the
jail, then stepped out the door. The first thing he saw was a pretty woman with hair the color
of maple sugar—a rich brownish-blonde. The frown on her face spoke volumes, and the air
around her pronounced trouble. She made a straight path for him.
“Mr. Heckmaster. Or should I call you Sheriff? Or Mayor? I need to discuss the ad in
the Lancaster County Republican with you. Someone placed an ad, but your brother tells me
there is no school here. I’m sure there has to be a mistake. There’s only one Berner in New
Mexico Territory. I’m very capable at reading maps. If I wasn’t, I would be ashamed to call
myself a teacher.”
He doubted she had taken more than two or three breaths during the speech. If she
made talking in rambling paragraphs a habit, no wonder she looked so peaked.
“Teacher?” He glanced along the street, but it was deserted as usual. “Lady, we don’t
have a school here. Certainly no need of a teacher.”
Her hands balled into fists that settled on her hips. The dress she wore was patched—
the egg yolk yellow faded into something even more disgusting. It had little flowers dotting
the material, but they looked as worn as her scuffed black boots.
“Then what was the purpose of placing an ad in the Lancaster County Republican?”
She spoke with the fierceness of a mama bear warning predators away from her cubs.
Wystan reached into his shirt pocket and drew out a toothpick.
“I didn’t place any ad in any Lancaster County anything.” He looked past her, expecting
Eban to saunter up the street. Eban had to be the brother she’d referred to since Tell was still
on the trail.
“Someone did,” she insisted. She fished a crumpled and much-folded piece of newsprint
out of the pocket hidden by the folds of her skirt. “See? Right here it says, ‘School teacher
wanted for spring term at Berner Schoolhouse. Wages paid based on experience. Room and
board provided. Apply in person at City Hall, Berner, New Mexico Territory.’ I’m sure my
eyes don’t deceive me.”
Wystan stared at the clipping, then back at the woman. A galaxy of freckles spattered
across her nose and cheekbones, making her look younger than her eyes said she was. Full
figured and sure as shittin’ a grown woman. The wariness and worry darkening her hazel
eyes gave her away as one with a lot of trouble on her plate.
            “I can read.”
She pulled the ad away from his face, folded it, and returned it to her pocket. “Where
would you suggest I look for an explanation, Mr. Heckmaster?”
Fussy little thing. “I assure you that no one in this town did. There’s been a mistake.
Sorry to inconvenience you, Miss Schoolteacher. Now turn around and head home.”
A flush colored her cheeks. “I can’t head home! I have no home to return to. My little
sister and my friend are waiting at the doctor’s office for me to straighten this mess out. The
ad says that room and board will be provided. I’d expected to move into a room, sir.”
“You left them with Eban?” That explained his absence.
“Beryl is ill, Sheriff. This is the first town we’ve seen in days and it was past time for her
to get some attention.” Despair crept into her voice.
Wystan shifted his weight and transferred the toothpick to the other side of his mouth.
“Eban’s not exactly trained in human medicine.”
The woman’s mouth opened into an O. She shook her head and seemed to regain her
senses. “He’s a veterinarian? He seemed certain he could help Beryl.”
Wystan cleared his throat. “Sure, animal doctor. I’m sorry for your misfortune, lady,
but as you can see, Berner’s about run into the ground. There’s nothing here for you or your
friend. Might be best to move along.”
She seemed to deflate. “Move along.” Her lips moved, softly forming the words, but it
was as though she didn’t comprehend them. “We’ll move along, right down the trail into the
next town where there won’t be any teaching jobs either. Sylvie, Beryl, and I will starve to
death on the side of the road with no one in the world to care.”

Waitress Vivian Shawcross loves a costume party. When Halloween comes along, she can’t wait for the spooky fun to start. However, a mix up over her costume and a road diversion, are just two of the mini disasters she encounters en route to her ghostly night out. Stranded in a remote English village, isn’t her idea of fun, but when a gorgeous vampire is thrown into the equation, Vivian discovers that her fun night out has only just begun.

“Would you like a scythe? I’ve got a beast of a one here.” She watched him hold up the gleaming article, its silver blade, a fitting embodiment of cut and thrust. “It’s the best I can offer at this stage.”
She pursed her lips together in what she hoped was a display of annoyance.
He sighed. “A bloody head and the scythe? I’ve done a great trade in bloody heads this week.” She watched him reach under the counter, before holding aloft a bearded man, his mouth held open in a gaping ‘O’ shape. Proudly he displayed it to her, the blood dripping from the neck area, as it swung to and fro. “Personalise him. Give him a name. Let the accessory work for you. Picture it, scythe in one hand, head in the other. Don’t tell me it’s not a look the men folk wouldn’t clamour for.”

She felt her face flush red with frustration.
“Right then, scythe, head and I’ll upgrade you to the black velvet, hooded gown, with inside iPod pocket. Now I can’t say fairer than that.”
“Fine.” Vivien tapped her foot, her impatience obvious. “It will have to do. You need to know something though, Alex. I’m not happy. I’m your best customer. In fact, sometimes I think I’m your only customer. There’s never anyone in here, apart from me.”

“That’s because I’m a discerning shopkeeper. I’ll have you know, I’m rather choosy when it comes to my clientele.”
“There’s a recession on. You can’t afford to be choosy. You know I have great faith in you, Alex and I’m here without fail at all public holidays and celebrations, yet I can’t see how dressing as Death will win me over more men than the Sexy Black Cat costume. I had my nails painted in gothic black and even bought some PVC boots from the kinky shop around the corner. Even the boots won’t save this outfit. ”
Shrugging his shoulders, Alex escorted Vivian around to the dressing area of his costume shop. “What can I tell you, Darling? It was an honest mistake. Rest assured, you’re going to rock this outfit.”
“And how can you be so sure?” Vivian felt defeated, even before she tried the costume on. Her heart had been set on being dressed as a Sexy Black Cat and hopefully landing herself a gorgeous hunk of a date for the evening.
“I know because you’re the sort of girl who can turn a disaster into a triumph. Any man worth his salt is going to love you in this outfit. There’s much more to you than PVC. Don’t sell yourself short.”
Vivian didn’t feel convinced. Shrugging the cloak on over her waitress uniform, she gazed in disappointment at her reflection in the mirror. “I look like flipping Harry Potter. All I need is a wand and a flying car and I’ll be good to go.”
“Nonsense. Your hair is much longer than Harry’s. Maybe it’s the glasses.” Alex pushed the scythe into her left hand and grinned. “Slip into an attractive pair of contacts and you’ll be fine.”
“I sense you’re trying to get rid of me.”
“That’s correct. I am. I have my own party to go to tonight. Tell you what,” he said pushing her out of the door. “If you don’t bag a man tonight, there won’t be a charge for the hire. Now have fun.” With that, Vivian Shawcross found herself standing on the pavement at five PM with no
other choice than to go to a Halloween party in Leeds, dressed as Death.
