Michael Thal presents Koolura and the Mystery at Camp Saddleback

The Koolura Series Takes Off

The Legend of Koolura tells the story of the metamorphosis of a pre-teen girl with extraordinary psychic powers overcoming a stalker bent on her destruction.

She has the ability to dematerialize at will and reappear where she chooses. She can move objects with her mind and she can even defy gravity!

In book one of the series, a degenerate, determined to retrieve Koolura’s unrealized cool powers and hurt any of her friends who get into his way, is stalking Koolura.

In book two, Koolura and the Mystery at Camp Saddleback, just released by Solstice Publishing, Koolura wakes up after her first night at camp drained and powerless. Who or what has stolen her psychic powers?

As Koolura searches for the truth about her power loss, she and the Chumash Girls have to deal with pranksters ruining their cabin and destroying their summer. Campers plan revenge but problems escalate as lives are threatened. Will Koolura and the Chumash Girls solve the mystery at Camp Saddleback?

Let’s look in on Koolura the morning of her second day at camp:

Excerpt:
In the morning Koolura awakened to the chatter of voices. Andrea, dressed in a camp shirt with blue shorts, was heading out the door. Linda exited the bathroom giving Koolura a happy wave.

Morning Koolura. Sleep well?” Linda didn’t wait for an answer. She darted out the cabin door behind Aletha.

How can everyone be so cheerful? I feel as if I slept on a log. It must have been the nightmare about being chased.

Across the aisle, Leila slept. She could probably sleep through an earthquake.

Koolura padded into the empty bathroom. With no one in sight, she hooked her mind around the bar of soap three feet away willing it to float toward her. But nothing happened. She focused on the faucet over the sink to turn it on, but no water appeared. Panic filled her mind.
What’s the matter? I was able to do it last night.
Koolura tried to float, but remained anchored to the bathroom floor as if lead filled her PJ’s.
Stunned, Koolura thought, Oh my God, what’s the matter with me? I lost my powers.

Kim Cresswell stops by Penny's Tales

Blurb
A killer lurks in the shadows of Hyde Park, New York…waiting.
Manhattan District Attorney, Lauren Taylor, is about to take on the most important case of her career, prosecuting Gino Valdina, acting mob boss of New York’s most influential crime syndicate.
For three decades, Gino Valdina has led New York’s Valdina crime family. Since his recent indictment for murder, the leadership of the family is in turmoil, appalled by the death of one of their own, Gino’s wife, Madelina. Without the support of the family behind him, Valdina will do anything to save himself.
But Lauren soon discovers, things aren’t always as they seem when she’s tossed into a mystery, a deadly conspiracy that reaches far beyond the criminal underworld and a journey into the past makes her a target…and anyone she’s ever loved.

Excerpt
Eric slowed the Mustang to a crawl and searched the street for his informant, Jimmy Flame. This part of Brooklyn had it all—garbage, graffiti and gangs—a snake pit where debts were paid in blood. As it turned out, he spotted the lanky twenty-something-drug-dealer strolling up the sidewalk.
Eric didn’t trust the scar-faced kid dressed in clothes three sizes too big, but Jimmy knew the streets and somehow stayed clear of the gangs. A real miracle. He also knew Jimmy would be discreet, if he knew what was good for him.
Eric pulled the car over and stopped. Jimmy looked him square in the eye, turned, and kept walking.
Eric jumped out of the car and snatched the back of Jimmy’s shirt. “We need to talk.” He whirled him around.
Hey, you promised you’d only come around at night.” Jimmy scanned up and down the street clearly worried someone might see him with a cop.
It’s important. Get in.”
Jimmy hopped into the car and scrunched down low in the passenger seat.
Eric started the engine and glanced at Jimmy’s low riding jeans. “How the hell can you wear those baggy ass pants? They should be outlawed.”
What man? You don’t like my gear? These pants are cool.” Jimmy ran his hand over his knee. “What’s so important?”
Heard anything about prosecutor Stephen Taylor or the new district attorney?” Jimmy kept one hand clutched on the door handle.
Convinced the kid might bolt if he had the chance, Eric sped up.
I ain’t heard nothing on the DA, but—”
If you know something, spit it out. I’m not in the mood for games.” Eric looked at him. Jimmy’s shaved head glistened with sweat in the early morning sun.
Man you’re gonna get me killed.” Jimmy sank back into the seat, his fingers tightened around the handle of the door. “Some dude was looking for someone to put the scare into Taylor and the DA. I never saw him, but one of my boys told the guy to hit the road. The deal didn’t smell right. Something was way off.”
How did Paul Cassico end up dead?”
Jimmy lit a cigarette and took an extra-long drag. “Cassico is a small-time bookie, you know, neighborhood shit, horse races and fights. Valdina learned the guy would be cooperating with the feds so Valdina had one of his crew take him out.”
Did Cassico ever mention who killed my father?”
The stupid shit went around flappin’ his gums. Said he knew who shot the cop in the warehouse drug deal. He also said he’d make a large stash when he went to the cops.”
Eric’s heart pounded. “Did he give a name, Jimmy?”
Nope.”
Shit. I need to find the shooter.”
I don’t wanna get involved with Valdina’s crew. You’re talking Mafia.” Jimmy shook his head.Man. I’m too young to die.”
Eric could tell by the quiver in the kid’s voice, he was scared. Something he’d never seen before. “Has someone threatened you?”
Not yet. They will as soon as I start asking questions.”
You’re smart. You’ll find a way to get the info. Besides, if you piss me off, I’ll drag your drug-pedalling ass off to jail. You understand?”
Jimmy remained silent for a moment. “Man, you’re a hard-ass.”
Find out what you can.” Eric steered the car into an empty parking lot and tossed fifty bucks at him. “I’ll be back in a couple of days and watch your back.”
As Eric pulled away, he heard Jimmy call him an asshole. Okay, he deserved that. And yeah, he was tough on the kid when he needed to be. It was all part of the job. He liked Jimmy, but he’d never admit it. From what he just witnessed, Jimmy was scared shitless and that worried Eric even more.

K. C. Sprayberry presents The Wrong One on Penny's Tales

 The Wrong One

Blurb:
One by one, the residents of Landry, Georgia gave up on finding Lyssa Winders alive. It had, after all, been fourteen years since she vanished. The men who invaded her home left behind the bodies of those she loved with all her heart. Only one person never gave up and still searches for Lyssa. Kyle Tinker battles his own demons from that night, when he hid like a coward instead of running for help. Their eighteenth birthday looms on the horizon, and Kyle is determined to bring Lyssa home.
Meanwhile, Kim Tinker is having trouble understanding her dreams about a pretty blonde girl—she has no idea that these dreams are of her life as Lyssa Winters. She also hears a guy who has recently started talking to her--in her head. All Kim wants is to get away from a family which hates her, but doing it safely is the one thing which eludes her.
On the day of the Freedom Festival, Kyle sees the girl he never thought he'd see again. And Lyssa finds the one person she's protected for the last fourteen years on their shared birthday.
Excerpt:
Four-year-old Lyssa Winders landed with a thump on her living room floor. Her bottom hurt from the hard wood, and her head ached from all the yelling and shouting she'd been hearing. Nothing made sense. She just wanted this to stop.
Her parents, Auntie Keisha, Nana Brandy, and Grandpa Monty kneeled in front of her. They had their hands on the back of their heads, and they looked very scared.
"Gonna talk now, Jack?" the stinky man asked. He had carried her out of the safety of her bedroom and dumped her on the floor. "Or do I hurt your kid?"
Stinky jerked Lyssa to her feet. She couldn't run. He held her tight in front of his nasty smelling body.
"She's just a baby," Daddy said. "Don't hurt Lyssa. Let her go. She won't tell anyone anything." He stared at her with scared eyes. "Right, baby? You won't say anything." She nodded, and her daddy faced Stinky. "See, she agreed. Just let her go."
"Nope." A man near her laughed.
She turned her head and saw her puppy. Rags crept out from behind the sofa. His tail stood straight in the air, and he made growly noises in his throat.
Lyssa swallowed hard. Rags couldn't come any closer. Stinky had a gun. He had a horribly tight grip on her shoulder.

Deb Melanie and her Winter's Blog Tour stops by Penny's Tales

Winter Olympics

One of the things I love most about winter is the time when the Olympics come around. One of my favourite sports to watch is the ice skating, though I do like the speed skating too. Today, I thought I’d share a little trivia with you all and also ask, which winter sports are your favourite and why?

  • The youngest athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Games was 15-year-old American figure skater Tara Lipinski in Nagano 1998.

  • Norway has won the most number of total medals at the Winter Games.

  • The first Winter Olympic female gold medalist was Herma Planck Szabo of Austria in the Figure Skating Event in 1924.

  • The first athlete ever to win five medals in one event was German luge great Georg Hackl.

  • The men's 2006 gold medal winner, Russian Yevgeny Plushenko, is the first skater in history to successfully land a quad-triple-triple jump combination in competition. Canadian Kevin Reynolds, 17, achieved the feat in 2008.

  • According to the National Sporting Goods Association, U.S. consumers spent $309 million on snowboarding equipment in 2008. That's more than hockey and football equipment combined ($249 million).

  • The oldest man to receive a Winter Olympics medal is 83-year-old Anders Haugen. The Norwegian-American actually received his ski jump bronze medal 50 years after he competed in 1924 when a scoring error was discovered in 1974.

    Blurb:
Winter McAndrew is on the brink of divorcing her philandering husband, Philip, when he dies in a car crash. One year later and with unfinished business; Philip is still earth bound and interfering in his wife’s love life. Trying to make amends isn't always easy when you're dead. Not only has Winter fallen for her old crush, Jack Tobin, but he also happens to be Philip’s cousin. With more complications than a woman needs at Christmas, Winter tries to find peace at her holiday home in The Lake District. However, when she finds herself snowed in with Jack; ghosts, old and new cause quite a stir. Will Winter get her man, or will ghostly Philip put an end to all her festive fantasies?

    Excerpt:
Did she hear them correctly? Did they really say…dead? Dead, as in door nail? Dead, as in never coming back?
Turning her eyes away from the thick gold band on her wedding finger, Winter looked around the sterile white corridor; old magazines littered a nearby coffee table, a late night cleaner erratically distributed disinfectant onto the tiled floor with a well-worn mop; the stench felt overwhelming. Hushed voices spoke in the reception area, adding a stark contrast to the wailing of a distant siren. Despite the time, she felt surprised to see the hospital in such a hive of activity.
The phone had woken her just after three; the journey to her destination taking well over an hour. Thick, falling, snow hampered each mile, drawing out her distress and sense of fear. A lack of information and worry about the unknown added to the already crushing sense of fear. After drinking two cups of weak coffee, she watched the morning sunrise through a nearby window, feeling the apprehension dawn upon a new chapter of her life.

Alice Germond talks about A Small Story for Page 3 on Penny's Tales

JACK GERMOND PENS BREAKOUT NOVEL A SMALL STORY FOR PAGE 3

Montreal, Quebec, Canada—MuseItUp Publishing is proud to release political pundit Jack Germond’s break out novel, A Small Story for Page 3. Jack completed the final edits just days before his death in August of 2013 and the ebook released on the day of his passing. The print book will release November 6, 2013.

Tell us all about Jack and what made him tick and what did he like doing when he wasn't writing!

Jack loved the race track, would study the form almost as if he was studying candidates for President.  Always looking for that Triple Crown winner – or a great President.  He loved good food and conversation with friends and extending the evening.

Tell us about your family – married?   Kids?   Where you live!

Jack and I spent most of our not working time in our house in the country – on a bend of the Shennandoah River – where the bald eagles have returned and the sun sets like a Constable painting.

Our kids, his and mine, have grown up nicely and out grandchildren are a source of amusement, pride and hopes.

If you could travel anywhere in or out of this world, where would it be?

Jack loved Scotland, French food, Lake Como and many places.  He admired the space program but freeze dried dinner not so much.

What is the most scared Jack had ever been?

I think when his older daughter, Mandy, was diagnosed with Leukemia.  She didn’t make it.

Where did he come up with the idea for this story?

It grew out of the many years Jack spent on the road covering politics and working for newspapers.

What was Jack's favorite thing about writing?

Jack liked creating the characters and letting them take on a life of their own.

What was his biggest pet peeve about writing?

I’d guess it would have been Re-writing.

Most important – where can we buy this story?

A Small Story for Page 3
Harry Fletcher can’t for the life of him figure out what exactly the ‘nugget’ of information his colleague, Eddie Concannon, uncovered prior to his death is. Picking his way along the threads of information, Harry soon finds himself at odds with government officials and his own newspaper seems to be involved in the collusion.  Join Harry as he deciphers the clues and enjoy a journey into the world of investigative reporting set against a colorful back drop of characters and locations.

Jack Germond (January 30, 1928 – August 14, 2013) was a retired newspaper man, columnist and TV pundit. But like a Thoroughbred racehorse, a reporter never actually retires—he just writes about other things. The author brings his vast knowledge and understanding of the press and the business of getting the information to public to bear in his breakout novel, A Small Story for Page 3. Mr. Germond was nationally known as a bemused liberal and was a regular on The McLaughlin Group as well as appearing on other public affairs TV programs — CNN, Meet The Press and The Today Show among others. He covered ten presidential elections, and with Jules Witcover wrote a book covering each presidential election from 1980 to 1992. Timothy Crouse made Germond a prominent figure in “Boys on the Bus” his acclaimed book on the 1972 presidential election. Mr. Germond has previously published two non-fiction books, his memoir “Fat Man in A Middle Seat” (Random House 2002) and “Fat Man Fed Up” (Random House 2005) a scride on the decline of politics in the United States. Along with Jules Witcover he wrote a syndicated column that ran in 140 papers five days a week from 1977 to 2001.

Chris Farley once spoofed Germond on Saturday Night Live. Germond was known for his no nonsense approach to reporting and his love of good food, good liquor and good friends. He instituted The Germond Rule which two generations of political reporters have adhered to. The rule simply stated that when a group of reporters dined together the tab would be split evenly, no matter who ate or drank more. This caused his many friends to eat and drink defensively when covering stories and enjoying good company.

Jack Germond was one of a kind and he will be missed. MuseItUp Publishing is proud to publish his first and only fiction novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Political Investigating By A Winner August 16, 2013
A SMALL STORY FOR PAGE 3 by Jack W. Germond

I never expected my first review for author Jack W. Germond to be my last, but I guess if it has to be the last, it might as well be a top notch book to review...and that's the case here.

Inside a major D.C. Newspaper hub where the busy world of digging out political intrigue is daily fair that makes the headlines and sells the papers, Jack W. Germond has created a tense, boiler pot of a story. He shows one and all the glamour we all think the media news possesses is actually coated beneath many layers of tarnish, some obvious, some concealed, some seedy, and some spreading like a dry rot through the majestic limbs of our stately cherry trees.

No one alive today can look at the day-to-day business that transpires within the Beltway and not know lies, deceit, and subterfuge play huge parts in creating the ever shifting sands creating the foundation of politics. Jack Germond's ace reporter, Harry Fletcher knows this seedy world very well, and plays it with the panache of a man who's been at it for a long time.

Upon the death of his colleague and friend, Harry is given what those in the business call a "nugget"...a story not fully developed, and told to flesh it out...find the meat...get the story...if it really exists, but keep it close to his chest.

Treacherous waters. Harry must swim upstream against the odds, but when he does, who will he uncover are the real sharks waiting to tear him fin from fin?

This is a gripping story I read from beginning to end in one sitting. Mr. Germond's story telling skills captivated and had me cheering Harry Fletcher on as he came up against obstacle after obstacle and obstacle while ferreting out the truth. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars An Insider's Story About News Reporting August 20, 2013

Ace political reporter Harry Fletcher has problems: a politician threatening him, a young reporter gunning for his job, a wife having an affair and a publisher who doesn't want to print his latest story. This first novel by veteran newsman Jack Germond gives an insider's look at the job of journalism as Fletcher interviews sources who wish to remain anonymous, tracks down promising leads, rallies his editors' support and finally, confronts his boss. You'll never read a newspaper again without thinking of this "small story" and the ethical dilemma it describes.

I have some newspaper background and the book is written by a former newsman.

The book reveals how newspaper ownership and management can censor and color the news, as it now does.

A bit of sex spices up the story.

Jack Germond is an excellent writer with a lifetime of experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars What is it like to be a political reporter? September 12, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
I love to read about politics. My favorite political reading is a book looking back on events and giving the big-picture story and, usually, details that didn't make the daily newspapers. My favorite such books were written by Jack Germond and his partner Jules Witcover, especially "Mad As Hell," about the 1992 presidential election. Jack was also a well-known talking head (The McLaughlin Group); Jack was the one that wasn't full of himself.

I had the great pleasure of meeting and getting to know Jack and having dinner with him and his wife Alice over Thanksgiving weekend for most of the past ten years or so. I was in heaven sitting at the table with Jack and hearing his political stories. This novel (his first) was published the day he died. Not surprising, it's about political reporters. It provides a window into their lives and the issues they live with - what is fair to report? how does one build a story? how does a reporter persuade people to help him get to the truth? I suspect it also gives a good glimpse into Jack's own personal life. It provides an object lesson in the ethics of journalism. I highly recommend it to those who care about political reporting and/or want a good read.

Sizzling PR presents Mocha, Moonlight, and Murder on Penny's Tales

Mocha, Moonlight, and Murder
MaryAnn Kempher

Book Blurb:
Instead of feeding her late-night appetite, a midnight food run nearly gets 28-year-old Katherine O’Brian killed. She’s the only person to see the man who brutally murdered a local woman, and the killer is hell-bent on making sure she doesn’t talk.

Scott Mitchell left a broken engagement behind when he moved to Reno, and the
last thing he needs is more melodrama. But when he and Katherine are paired for a college project, that’s what he gets. It can be very distracting when someone is out to kill your lab partner. Together, they try to figure out what the police haven’t been able to—the identity of the murderer. Passion flares, but with Katherine’s life in danger, romance seems like more than a bad idea.

Scott and Katherine will face jealousy, misunderstandings, lust, and rivals, not to
mention attempted murder—and all before their first real date.

The last day of classes prior to the winter break, she's ready to share some stupendous news with Dave, but tragedy intervenes when her daddy texts while driving a bus. Trea is left wondering if she can ever be free of a curse that heaps a lot of bad luck on her whenever good things happen to her.
Book Trailer: http://youtu.be/WsHmHiZXERY

Excerpt:
Where U @
The text is from my guy, Dave Woods. It's a code, a way for him to help me feel better about everything. Mostly, it's his way of showing me that he cares.
Kitchen. I roll my eyes. Cleaning.
Want to come do mine?
His return text sends me into a fit of giggles. That's something only he can accomplish.
RFS?
More code, and this one sends fear shivers up and down my spine. I am in no way ready for school, but I'll have to go tomorrow, no matter what.
I text him back, slide my phone into a pocket, and open the door to a floor to ceiling pantry. To put away the last of the dishes, I have to step into a room that is narrower than a shoebox.
The same reaction overtakes me that I experience every single night, as soon as my foot moves through the doorway. Cold sweat rolls down my back. I can't catch my breath, and the walls feel like they're squeezing the life out of me.
