Kelly Abell stops by Penny's Tales

Blurb
Hot tempered, Mabe O'Banyon will do whatever it takes to keep the family's Irish pub, Shenanigans, out of the mob's dirty hands. She quickly learns, though, their attorney and the bank will offer no help. So, she calls in the reinforcements--Mara and Meg. She hasn't seen her two sisters for years, but her desperate message brings them running.
Commercial real estate developer, Aaron Shaw has a secret. He arrives in Monticello, FL, expecting to purchase a quaint Irish pub and move on to his next conquest. But the transaction doesn't take place as planned--in fact, it doesn't take place at all. The hardheaded owner--a stunning redhead with curves that don't quit--isn't selling.
With time running out and the mob on their heels, Aaron wants nothing more than to save the woman he's fallen for from impending danger. Mabe is torn between a man she loves but can't trust and the need to hold on to her family's pub. Their choices lead them down a path neither could have guessed.

Excerpt - When Mabe meets Aaron Shaw for the first time
The door to the pub swung open for a tall, ebony haired man wearing an expensive tan suit. Mabe straightened. Riveted, she stared at his strikingly angular face. His chin, grooved by a slight dimple, struck her as sexy.
His gaze roamed the bar, settling on her. Warmth radiated through her entire body. Never had she felt such an intense attraction to a man. Who the hell is he? She didn’t recall ever seeing him in the pub. Her nerves tingled. Resembling a panther, he wove his way through the crowd. Slightly ashamed of her attraction to a strange man at her father’s wake, she turned her back, resuming her position behind the bar. She spoke to several patrons, mentally noting their drink orders on her way.
No one could pull a pint like your da,” an old grizzled man at the end of the mahogany counter stated. “Smooth like silk he was.”
Mabe smiled. “He was, Angus. We’ll miss him.” She handed a frothy mug to the man. “Here you go. Enjoy that.”
I will,” Angus declared, raising his glass to her. “To many years.”
She picked up a glass of Coke, clinked it against Angus’s mug. “And to you.”
I’ll have one of those if you don’t mind,” a deep voice spoke from behind her.
Turning, ready with a flirty response on her tongue, she came face to face with her handsome stranger. His eyes matched the deep rich mahogany of the bar. His smile, while slightly crooked, seemed genuine and swept the words right out of her brain.
Uh…sure. Name your poison.”
Guinness?”
Mabe nodded, pulled the beer, scraping the foam from the top. “I’ve never seen you here before. What’s your name, and how did you know my dad?”
His gaze caught hers, sympathy reflected in his eyes. She tried to look away, but she couldn’t. The man was a god.
I’m sorry for your loss.”
Thanks. He will be missed for sure.”
I just realized…this is his wake, isn’t it? A private party?”
She nodded. “It is.”
The man smiled gently. “I’m sorry. I’m afraid I’m intruding. I should go.”
She set the beer in front of him. “Nah, we’re all friends here. It is a private party, but stay if you’d like.” She gestured. “Those are my sisters Meg and Mara. We own the place now.”
It’ll be hard to run it without your father, won’t it?”
Mabe sighed, leaning on her elbows. “It won’t be the same, for sure, but we’ll do okay. It’ll take some work….” She glanced lovingly around the pub with all its Irish paraphernalia adorning he walls. “Da, loved this place. I grew up here. It’s our place. We’ll make it work.”
She shivered, feeling his intense stare. Her skin burned under the laser scan of his eyes. Her pulse jumped. If the room were empty except for the two of them, he’d be in some serious trouble. He took a sip of the Guinness, still staring at her over the mug.
She licked her lips then broke the gaze. She swiped at the glossy mahogany top with a rag. “What brings you to town?”
Business,” was his response.
Ooh, cryptic, are we?” She flirted.
Suits me for now.”
A man at the end of the counter signaled for her. She held up a finger then approached her guest. She served a few more beers, all the while being extremely aware of his gaze. His allure was more powerful than any she’d ever experienced. Monticello wasn’t full of dashing men in expensive suits, but it had its fair share of good lookers. Lord knew she’d flirted with some from time to time, even dated a few, but none of them stirred in her what this man did.
No longer needed, she returned to him, eyeing his empty mug. “Another?”
He nodded, offered her a smile.
Her knees weakened. She steadied herself by grasping the smooth wood. What the hell is wrong with me? She pulled his beer, but before she handed it to him she asked, “What did you say your name was?”
He chuckled. “I didn’t.”
She set the mug down in front of him. “Oh, come on. You’re not going to waltz into my pub during my daddy’s wake and not tell me who you are. It’s not polite.”
One dark eyebrow rose. “Not polite, huh?”
Not at all,” she declared, leaning on the bar, offering him her most dazzling smile.
Okay then…if you insist.
I do.”
He held out his hand. Mabe reached out, taking his warm palm in hers. The air between them practically crackled with tension. “Aaron Shaw.”
Her previously heated blood froze. In one swift moment, all the allure she’d experienced earlier evaporated. This is the shark trying to buy my pub. The nerve of this man, waltzing in here, flirting with me, when all the while he’s casing the joint for a future purchase. She grabbed his beer unceremoniously dumping it on his head. The dark brew dripped from his hair all over his tan suit.
What the hell?” he shouted, jumping off the stool.
Get out of my pub,” she yelled at him.

Bio
I can't remember a time when I didn't want to write.  From the time I was learned enough to string sentences together I liked writing stories.  In high school I was the literary editor of our school magazine Sketches and had a series of short stories that I'd written even then.  I'm published with two wonderful publishers, World Castle and Solstice Publishing, and on my own as an Indie.

I live in Florida with my two adult children and my husband of 30+ years.  I have a wonderful dog named Snickers that can even open her own Christmas presents! (don't believe me?  Look below) When I'm not working full time in the insurance industry, I write.  I believe any writer should write because they love the craft. The rest will come in time.  I hope you enjoy reading my stories as much as I've enjoyed writing them

Louisa Mullerworth stops by Penny's Tales

1.     Tell us all about yourself and what makes you tick and what do you like doing when you aren’t writing! I suppose it depends on what I am doing. If I am relaxing then bad telly and good company; American Dad, Family Guy, Charmed and Bones along with my wonderful fiancĂ© and pup and I can happily relax a night away! But if I am working with the wonderful group of authors I have been privileged enough to get to know (yourself included Penny) through my job as the Marketing Advisor for Nocturnal Press Publication, then I will often sit with BBC Radio 2 on and get lost in my work; talking to and organizing events, or giving advice, or simply talking to an author and seeing how far they have come makes me so happy. Needless to say all aspects of my life is very much in a good place and I get great satisfaction from working with the people I do, whether it is writing or in the Marketing Advisor role.

2.     Tell us about your family – married?   Kids?   Where you live! I am engaged due to be married next year. Would our American Staffie Claude count as a kid? He can certainly act like one when he wants to. We are for all intents a wonderfully happy. And I live in a small town in Leicestershire.

3.     If you could travel anywhere in or out of this world, where would it be? Do you know what I would love to go back to France, and go to Egypt, I have always had a love affair with these places… Oh and I would love to spend more time in Devon, I grew up there and it is like coming home whenever I visit.

4.     What is your favorite all time movie? You know what this is a really hard one to answer… I love horror films but I also love Science Fiction and my all time favorite is StarGate (The 1994 version); the one with James Spader, Alexis Cruz and Kurt Russell… It was one of the biggest influences of in my writing. I just loved it!

5.     What about weekly TV show?  Why? At this moment in time? Although as I said before I have a list of programs I watch almost religiously to unwind I am very much into two programs at the moment… THE BLACKLIST with James Spader and Megan Boone, (can you see a trend?) The amazing dialect and writing, acting and visual story telling draws you in. And James Spader’s character; ‘Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington’ is so complex it leaves you wanting to like him although you feel as though you shouldn’t. The other is StarGate Universe. It is a wonderful mix of storytelling/line, action with wonderful actors and actresses like David Blue, Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, Brian J. Smith, Elyse Levesque and Alaina Huffman… (To name a few.)

6.     What is the scariest situation you have ever been in? Wow Penny you don’t hold back do you? The scariest? I am not sure I could say it… The second would be being told that there was nothing else they could do to stop my seizures and being labeled as ‘untreatable’ and being left to face a life with a twenty to thirty seizures daily… (It took two years and some rather radical treatments but I managed to convince some doctors to treat a different possible cause and the seizures have all but stopped. I think I have had two this month.)

7.     If you could have any fantasy, what would it be? To be a successful author and Marketing Advisor, to be stable and be married to my wonderful man. See out the rest of my life working hard and have a happy home life. (I’m boring really, my biggest fantasy is to be normal.)

8.     Now, Tell us about your book? Dying To Help; The Beginning Of The End is a Science Fiction Action Thriller which looks at the versatility of the Human Race and how well we are able to survive in the most extreme situations. It features a mother and her son as well as an array of people who are stuck in the situation which is when an Alien decides to corrupt a game to meet his own twisted needs.

9.     Where did you come up with the idea for your story? I thought of this when I was fifteen and have written a couple of different drafts. But I always thought there was something missing. I could never put my finger on it. Then in June of 2013 I hit it and finally it fell into place and I have now nearly finished it!

10.  Where can people find you? (give all your links) For facebook you can find me at www.facebook.com/AuthorLouisaMullerworth for Twitter look for @babymull, for my Blog its http://babymull.wordpress.com/ , my website is http://lmullerworth.wix.com/louisamullerworth and if you want to get in touch you can via email; l.mullerworth@gmail.com or through facebook. You can also find information about my role as an author and as a Marketing Advisor for Nocturnal Press Publications at www.npuniverse.com

11.  Most important – where can we buy your story? The book will be released June 18th 2014 however you can pre order a copy or buy tickets to one of my up and coming events in 2014 by emailing me for more information or to pre order!

IT'S HERE - The Unwanted Christmas Guest

I am so very excited that the big day is finally here!

The Unwanted Christmas Guest is now out and available!

Elizabeth McMurphy, an up and coming high powered attorney,  is out for vengeance.  Her sights are set on one of the richest and most powerful families in Colorado. Steve York is an obnoxious reporter that thinks the ice queen has gone too far and does all he can to get under her skin.

When one of the worst blizzards in history, hits Colorado and leaves a hurt Steve York, stranded with Elizabeth in a mountain cabin, she must decide to either take care of him, or throw him out to fend for himself.

Excerpt
“What’s going on here? Where the hell are my pants?”
Elizabeth practically jumped out of her skin. Steve stood in the bedroom doorway, wearing only some tight fitting pink sweats.
“I found you after your car went nose to nose with a tree.” She crossed her arms. “The question is, what were you doing up here in a snowstorm? Were you coming up here to spy on me?”
“Jesus, my head hurts.” Steve groaned and sat at the kitchen table. “And don’t flatter yourself.” He brought up his hands to rub his eyes and push on his temples. He started to say something when a giggle and a round of undistinguishable sounds caught his attention. Steve stared at the little girl, a whisper of a smile on his pale face. “You have a daughter?”
She chose to ignore the question. “Again, Mr. York, you were headed…where?”
“I was going to see some friends in Granby, then on to Steamboat to spend the holidays with my family.”
“You figured on taking a short cut on Badger Springs Road?”
“Basically,” he muttered. “I had a phone in my pants pocket…” Steve looked down at the pink sweats. “Yours, I presume?” At her nod, he asked with a smirk, “And you’re the one that took my clothes off?”
      “Junior, my neighbor.”
“If you’ll allow me to use your phone, I’ll call Triple A and get myself and my car out of your life.” He reached over to Katy and she latched onto his finger, the brightest smile ever illuminating her sweet face.
Elizabeth quickly picked her up, as if he would contaminate her by his touch.  “Phones are out.”
      “Internet?”
      “Nope.”
“How the hell do you live here?” he asked irritably.

Heather Brainerd and David Fraser stop by Penny's Tales

I have a brother/sister interview today.  Huge welcome to Heather Fraser Brainerd and David Fraser.  They have co-authored the paranormal mystery - The Sound of Sirens

Before getting down to business, one lucky commenter will win a prize, so be sure to leave your email address!

So, without any further ado.....

Tell us about your family – married?   Kids?   Where do you live
Heather: I live in Rochester, NY with my amazing photographer husband, our three boys, and a crazy rescue dog.
David: Yes, I have a wife and kids. Two of them. Two kids, that is, not two wives.

If you could travel anywhere in or out of this world, where would it be?
Heather: Scotland, to research family history and visit some castles. Or maybe Middle Earth.
David: Minneapolis, Minnesota, for two reasons. First, I'd like to stand on home plate at Target Field (I'm a Minnesota Twins fan) and I'd like to get chased away from Prince's house (again).

What is your favorite all time movie?
Heather: The Princess Bride. Romance, adventure, and humor; what could be better?
David: I'll tell you what can be better. Bromance, adventure, and very unintentional humor based on the fact that it's quite possibly the worst movie ever. Double Team, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman. I mean, the phrase "starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman" alone should tell you how bad it is.

What about weekly TV show?  Why?
Heather: I’m totally addicted to The Walking Dead. The writing, the acting, the effects — it’s all incredibly well done. Plus, zombies are cool.
David: Over the past year, most of my regular shows have ended. Burn Notice, Leverage, The Office, Fringe, iCarly, just to name a few. Now I binge watch older shows on Netflix. I recently started watching the original Star Trek with the intention of watching all episodes of all the Star Trek series, all 726 episodes, unfortunately including the animated series.

If you could have any fantasy, what would it be?
Heather: I’d live in Cinderella’s Castle in the Magic Kingdom. I’m sort of obsessed with Disney World!
David: Being invited into Prince's house to watch Star Trek with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman.

Now, Tell us about your book?
The Sound of Sirens is book two in the JosĂ© Picada, P.I. series. True to that series, it’s a paranormal mystery with a hefty dose of humor.

Where did you come up with the idea for your story?
The majority of the story is set in a theme park. Dave came up with the idea while on a ride with his kids!

Where can people find you?

Here’s an excerpt!

 Al tensed up.
I put a hand on his shoulder and said, “Settle down. Here’s what we’re going to do. In a second, we’ll casually stand up and walk over to the fence and point to all the crazy kids going past on the water slide. When I say so, we hop the fence and take off. We get the heck out of the park.”
“Before finding Dad?” Al sounded incredulous.
“Before finding Dad,” I said. “If the people that are looking for him are the same people that took him, how thorough a search do you expect?” His downcast eyes told me I had made my point. “So we get out of here and find a phone that works and get some real police on the case.”
Without missing a beat, Al stood and said as he leaned against the fence separating him from the Colorado Rapids water slides, a little louder than necessary, “Oh, man, I can’t imagine going down that thing when it's this cold out.”
I took my place next to him and said, “Ready?”
All I got in reply was a nod.
There wasn’t any need to give a countdown or shout “go!” We had talked about what we were going to do, and we just went ahead and did it, each throwing a leg over the barrier at the same time. Behind us, a bunch of voices (my educated guess would have been four) erupted, telling us to halt, to stop, to stay where we were, or something like that. They all shouted at the same time, making it kind of tough to tell what they were saying.
Five feet past the fence, we ran into our first obstacle. Well, second if you count the fence itself. The majestic Colorado Rapids, roughly two feet deep and six feet across, stood between us and freedom.  We both plunged through it without hesitation.
Al let out a loud string of curse words, ending with, “That is cold!”
I agreed with everything he said, but didn’t feel the need to say them all myself. Only after making it to the far bank, with Al’s pants and my dress completely soaked almost up to the waist, did I dare throw a look behind us. The security goons (or maybe they’d prefer “minions”—hopefully I wouldn’t have the chance to ask) weren’t even to the fence yet. Only three of them appeared to be in pursuit. The fourth was too busy talking into the sleeve of his jacket to chase us.
On the other side of the “river,” the ground sloped sharply down. We took this at a dead run, making each step more like a jump. A brief vision flashed through my head of astronauts bounding across the surface of the moon. I was pretty sure that’s what we looked like. At the bottom of the hill, there was another fence. Once we were over that one, we found ourselves back in foot traffic. We didn’t follow theme park etiquette and go around the groups meandering down the lane in front of us, instead busting right through their midst. Al offered up one hurried “excuse us” after another, but I didn’t have time for social niceties. I needed to find a place where we could disappear.
I raced through the park, the sound of laughter and smell of popcorn mixing with my rising sense of panic. Running for my life in a dress wasn’t the easiest thing I’d ever done, but at least I’d opted to wear ballet flats rather than the heels Lou had insisted I pack. It would have been my luck to evade the goons, only to twist an ankle, fall down, and break my neck in the process.
A stitch appeared in my side. My breathing was labored. “I really need to work out more” went through my mind as I tried to find refuge.
“In here!” Al called from behind me. I turned and followed him into a dark cave. Okay, so it wasn’t really a cave, but that’s how my adrenaline-besieged mind interpreted the small, dimly lit space. Al grabbed my arm and pulled me down behind a couple of big barrels.
“What is this place?’ I asked, gasping for breath and clutching my side.
“It’s the Buckaroo Bear meet-and-greet area.” Al said. He seemed to be recovering from our run. He must work out more than I do.
“So, where is he?”
“Who?”
“Buckaroo Bear.”
Al looked at me like I was crazy. “I don’t know. He must have the night off or something. Don’t we have more important things to worry about right now?” I just nodded, still trying to catch my breath. “So, who are those guys, and why are they chasing us?”

Leave a comment below for a chance to win the prize of your choice! If your name is randomly selected, you’ll get to choose one ebook from the JosĂ© Picada, P.I. Series: Deception Al Dente (book one) or The Sound of Sirens (book two).

Book Trailer

The Buzz

"Kudos to Ms. de Montigny for writing an original variation on the fantasy epic--unicorns intermingling with dinosaurs! The book's themes include the humane and environmental concerns that Watership Down and the films of Hayao Miyazaki have in common. If you have a middle grader or are just young at heart, pick up The Shadow Of The Unicorn." ~ 5 Star Review, Stuart W., Amazon
"The Shadow of the Unicorn is a must-read for all unicorn lovers, but even more so for the ones, like my self, who hadn't read anything about them yet. It is a thrilling and encouraging story about a young unicorn that has to save his herd after a meteor nearly destroyed their environment and killed the dinosaurs. Suzanne de Montigny created a compelling universe with believable characters and a great adventure story to challenge them with. While the story finishes in this book, I can't wait to read about the new adventures the unicorns will face.." ~ 5 Star Review, Antje H., Amazon
"This story pulled me in with a beautiful portrayal of a time and place where unicorns and dinosaurs live side by side. It moved me forward with unexpected twist and turns (a requirement in any good story). I found it hard to put the book down and was totally engaged in seeing the young characters (unicorns and dinosaurs) survive and grow because of the challenges they faced." ~ 5 Star Review, NW Harris, Amazon
"I just finished reading The Shadow of the Unicorn. What a story teller Suzanne de Montigny is. She combined unicorns with dinosaurs and spun a tail of magic that kept me turning the pages, not to mention throwing in an evil that came in the form of a human! What an enjoyable story - and here I thought these mystic animals were extinct. I just didn't know what to look for!" ~ 5 Star Review, Penny E., Amazon
"What a delightfully unique book. Unicorns and dinosaurs facing changing conditions. Darius is a young dinosaur capable of seeing the future. Azaria is a young unicorn who becomes a friend and learns from Darius. Yes, there are humans in this book. They are the villains of the story. Greedy beasts. I think both boys and girls will love this story. Very quick paced and easy to read. A delightful story, and I look forward to more from this author." ~ 5 Star Review, DM Lawrence, Amazon

Michael Thal presents Koolura and the Mystery at Camp Saddleback

The Koolura Series Takes Off

The Legend of Koolura tells the story of the metamorphosis of a pre-teen girl with extraordinary psychic powers overcoming a stalker bent on her destruction.

She has the ability to dematerialize at will and reappear where she chooses. She can move objects with her mind and she can even defy gravity!

In book one of the series, a degenerate, determined to retrieve Koolura’s unrealized cool powers and hurt any of her friends who get into his way, is stalking Koolura.

In book two, Koolura and the Mystery at Camp Saddleback, just released by Solstice Publishing, Koolura wakes up after her first night at camp drained and powerless. Who or what has stolen her psychic powers?

As Koolura searches for the truth about her power loss, she and the Chumash Girls have to deal with pranksters ruining their cabin and destroying their summer. Campers plan revenge but problems escalate as lives are threatened. Will Koolura and the Chumash Girls solve the mystery at Camp Saddleback?

Let’s look in on Koolura the morning of her second day at camp:

Excerpt:
In the morning Koolura awakened to the chatter of voices. Andrea, dressed in a camp shirt with blue shorts, was heading out the door. Linda exited the bathroom giving Koolura a happy wave.

Morning Koolura. Sleep well?” Linda didn’t wait for an answer. She darted out the cabin door behind Aletha.

How can everyone be so cheerful? I feel as if I slept on a log. It must have been the nightmare about being chased.

Across the aisle, Leila slept. She could probably sleep through an earthquake.

Koolura padded into the empty bathroom. With no one in sight, she hooked her mind around the bar of soap three feet away willing it to float toward her. But nothing happened. She focused on the faucet over the sink to turn it on, but no water appeared. Panic filled her mind.
What’s the matter? I was able to do it last night.
Koolura tried to float, but remained anchored to the bathroom floor as if lead filled her PJ’s.
Stunned, Koolura thought, Oh my God, what’s the matter with me? I lost my powers.
