Too Old for Christmas by Zina Abbott

A holiday romance set in 1854 Columbia, California.
Too Old for Christmas, by Zina Abbott.

 About the Book:

Irishman Sean Flood survived the potato famine, crossing the Atlantic, the Mexican-American War, and wandering the Western wilderness with his mules and freight wagon. But, due to poor diet and deprivation, his teeth did not fare well. It’s November of 1854 in Columbia, California, Queen of the Southern Mines, a city Sean is helping to rebuild after the disastrous fire the previous summer. Intense stabbing tooth pain drives him to see Doc Massey, the local dentist. He first stops by the mercantile to pick up a bottle of whiskey—for medicinal purposes—and food he’ll be able to eat when it’s all over. If only the beautiful but aggravating woman ahead of him who keeps her face half hidden and insists she won’t accept charity would finish up with her purchase so he can get his supplies, his tooth pulled and return home to his mules and half-built cabin….

That night, Sean meets the woman’s two sons, Jesse and Benjy McNair, and learns her secret. He decides with only three teeth left in his head, he needs widow Ona McNair’s charity—and he’s willing to pay for it. Sean won’t accept nine year-old Jesse’s declaration his family’s poverty means the boy is too old for Christmas that year. Sean is a full-grown man and he’s not too old for Christmas. He not only plans to come bearing gifts to Christmas Eve dinner with the McNairs, but he knows exactly what gift he wants for himself.
*Sweet Romance

Excerpt #4:

Even though he burrowed deep into his blankets inside the steep-sided
Carriage house at Columbia State Park
freight wagon that served as his bedroom, Sean sensed the inside of the barn grow brighter as someone opened the door. He threw his arm over his squeezed-tight eyes and groaned as the pounding headache topped by a touch of nausea hit him full force.
“Mr. Flood. Are you in here?”
Sean recognized the woman’s voice. It belonged to the aggravating blue-eyed beauty he had met the day before—the McNair boys’ mother.
Aye, nothing like meeting a woman when you be at your worst, boyo.
“I told you he keeps all his things in the wagon and sleeps in there, Ma. We only built a fire inside the cabin out of the wind to fix his supper.”
So, Jesse, you had to be bringing your ma up to talk to me at the crack of dawn, did you?
“Mr. Flood, if you’re here, may I please speak with you for a moment? The boys said you wanted to talk to me about chicken soup. They were very insistent I come.”
“Aye, be with you by the by.”
Sean stretched and rubbed his fingers through his hair, then scratched his beard. Unfortunately, it did nothing to ease his aching head. With his hair sticking up in tufts twisted in every direction, his beard bristling every which way and his rumpled clothes smelling sour with sweat, Sean felt loathe to face his visitors.
A woman will nay be letting a man die in peace, now will she? ’Tis what you get for having the boys ask their ma to cook for you.

Brian James Lane, author of the Fright Feast Series, is on the hot seat!

1. Tell us all about yourself, Brian, and what makes you tick and what do you like doing
when you aren’t writing!

a. I am currently an Enterprise Process Engineer for an e-commerce
company by day, aspiring writer by night.  When not working or writing, I
enjoy cheesy horror movies, the kinds which are unintentionally hilarious.
So much so, in fact, that I have taken pilgrimages with friends to the
filming locations of a few of my favorites.  I have been to the cabins
where the original Howling was filmed as well as the country and western
locales of Howling VII in Pioneertown, California.  I have also frequented
the processing plant where Silver Shamrock tried to destroy the children
of the world via Stonehenge-activated masks in Halloween III.  For my
next trip, I would like to visit Nilbog, where goblins wreaked havoc in
Troll II (interestingly enough, there were no trolls in that film).

2. Tell us about your family – married?   Kids?   Where you live!

a. I have been married for 18 years to a wonderfully beautiful and equally
tolerant woman.  Together, we have three children – a daughter who is
eleven and going on seventeen, an athletic nine year old son, and a six
year old boy who is a perpetual motion machine.  We all live in a suburb
of Salt Lake City, Utah.  I have no heritage here, but it is a beautiful place
with tons of outdoor opportunities and I feel I am here to stay.

3.  If you could travel anywhere in or out of this world, where would it be?

a. In this world, I would love to go to Ireland and go pub hopping. Outside
this world, I would rather enjoy a trip to Phobos or Deimos.  I hear they
are quite lovely this time of year.

4. What is your favorite all time movie?

a. Well, aside from the gluttony of terribly bad horror movies, I also enjoy
the occasional well-made variety.  One of those would probably be
Raiders of the Lost Ark.  I saw it in the theater as a young boy and it really
made an impression on me.  A close second would be Jaws.  Both are
incredibly re-watchable classics.

5. What about weekly TV show?  Why?

a. Weekly TV show has got to be The Walking Dead.  It is remarkable
because the characters are so well defined and dynamic.  Each has a
unique arc.  The group itself is evolving, as well.  You can see the walkers
as a force of nature whereby the world has ended, not just relenting hordes
of ravenous undead.  The situation could very well be a global pandemic
or other cataclysm, lending to the realism of the show despite its
outlandish premise.  It is a very well written and produced show in a time
where it doesn’t have to be to garnish market share.

6. What is the most scared you have ever been?

a. I had a dream once, a nightmare really, that I have never been able to
shake completely.  In the dream, I was in a crowded indistinct foreign
marketplace.  I am not quite sure where, but English was not the native
tongue.  I was there with my children.  I was lured over to a shop where a
young woman had a gambling table facing the sidewalk.  She promised
easy money to me for a small risk.  I was intrigued, so I went over, telling
the children to stay put for just a moment.  At the table, I began winning.
The woman congratulated me and urged me to continue gambling.  I was
distracted, but eventually remembered my children.  I glanced over just in
time to see some men snatching them and quickly hauling them away.  I
began to run over to help when the woman called me back to collect my
winnings.  I turned to her and realized that by the evil expression on her
face, she was in on it.  I ran to the kids, but they were gone.  Nobody
spoke my language and I could not get help.  I went back to the woman
with the gambling table, but she was gone as well.  I woke up and had to
immediately check on the children.  Ever since then, I have kept a close
eye on them in crowds.

7. If you could have any fantasy, what would it be?

a. I would like to, just once, find an abandoned castle where I could carry out
my experiments in peace.  Not to have the angry throngs wielding
pitchforks, axes, or shovels charging the gate and setting the place ablaze.
Secondary to that, perhaps not having the experiments escape and wreak
havoc on the villagers in the first place would be nice. Or X-ray vision.
Forget the first two.  Definitely X-Ray vision.

8. Now, tell us about your book?

a. I have a series of books out now that are horror anthologies for the adult
and young adult audience.  It is called Fright Feast, and there are four
books with thirteen tales each.  The stories range from reanimated
graveyard statues to mummies, vengeful spirits, monsters, and even an
apocalypse brought on by feral pigs.  The tales have been received well
from readers and critics alike.
Currently, I am working on a horror novel called Ghost Town Terror in
same vein as the classic Goosebumps series.  This is twist on the classic
ghost story whereby three normal young boys find themselves haunting an
entire town of apparitions.  It is the premiere title for a new imprint of the
Teen Fox Productions called Monstrous Memoirs due out in 2016.

9. Where did you come up with the idea for your story?

a. My brain is plagued by stories.  The problem I face is not coming up with
ideas, it is finding the time to write them down and “let the monsters out”.
I believe writers are inherently insane, to one extent or another.  I mean
normal people don’t live in fantasy lands as much as writers.  We’re a
weird, pitiable group.

10. What is your favorite thing about writing?

a. I like the manual act of writing, believe it or not.  The mechanics are
enjoyable to me.  I love writing on an old manual typewriter just as much
(perhaps more) than on a laptop.  Typing and the physical sensation of
creating directly from mind to fingertips is amazing.  I adore the process
entirely.

11. What is your biggest pet peeve about writing?

a. Marketing is a pain.  I am not a salesman.  I would rather write and leave
the promotion to others whenever possible.

12. Where can people find you? (give all your links)

a. http://www.amazon.com/Brian-James-Lane/e/B009KVNKAC
b. https://twitter.com/CreepyGram

13. Most important – where can we buy your story?

a. The Fright Feast series can be found at
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=series_rw_dp_labf?_encoding=UTF8&field-
collection=Fright+Feast&url=search-alias%3Ddigital-text and Ghost
Town Terror will be available through Teen Fox Productions next year.

Excerpt:

Marie furrowed her brow and softly interrupted, "André is the Walking Man?"

I looked at Marie and asked, "You've heard of him?"

Marie nodded. "Of course. He is a staple of the Downtown area. There are a few groups I'm affiliated with that hand out food and clothing to those in need. He never comes to these events so I leave them by the area where he sleeps." She paused, thoughtfully. "I just can't believe that it is André."

Joe cleared his throat and looked at his father. "What happened to André?"

Alfred sighed and after a moment said, "It really was the fault of that witch he was married to. She and her family treated him horribly. She was a gold digger and all she cared about was money and the prestige."

Marie interrupted Alfred by saying, "I remember her. She was so mean to André and all she cared about was looking rich. Wealth is a gift—she just wanted it for a toy. She treated André so badly... and his mother-in-law was the worst. She would put him down all the time. In front of other people, no less."

Alfred continued, "André was a good man and worked hard. He was working on a big project for the city. He worked night and day on the project and told me it was going to put Golden Lake on the map.

"He absolutely adored his daughter, too. I remember that clearly. She was his everything." Alfred paused, apparently lost in his thoughts. With a sigh he said, "There was a scandal with the project, though, and André got fired. Soon after, Dara left him, took Katherine with her and André fell apart. He started drinking heavily and, without his daughter, his life fell apart."

Joe looked at me and I fought to keep from throwing my hand over my mouth. There was purple fire in his eyes and I felt his anger. I already knew the story of André and I tried to smile at him.

I smelled burning flesh. Joe flashed in full armor fighting demons with a golden sword.

I gasped at the vision and brought my hand to my chest in shock feeling the key necklace, before I could stop the physical reaction. The necklace weighed heavily as did my heart. He would be fighting at my side soon.

Marie asked, "Are you okay, dear?"

Joe turned to look at his mother. He nodded and only said, "I never knew any of this."

Alfred continued, "I am sorry, son, but you asked for the truth. This is what I know. André was sleeping at the office and drinking all the time. He was supposed to give a presentation to a client and was drunk. He got into a scuffle with his boss and rumor has it, André punched him."

I feigned shock and said, "Oh my!"

Than is to blame. I don't know how I know or what happened but I vow to the Lord that I will make Than pay, thought Joe.

I choked and almost spit out my drink. I just heard Joe's thoughts! I had to set him straight and right away.

I cleared my throat and said awkwardly, "Joe, I think I left something in the car."

Joe looked at me with eyebrows raised. "Excuse me, we'll be right back," I said with a smile.

I walked outside and knew that Joe was right behind me. When I reached the car, I whirled and said in a stern tone, "Are you trying to get yourself killed?"

Joe stopped mid-step and said, "What are you talking about, Mary?"

I ran into his arms and whispered, "You cannot take on Than by yourself! I heard your thoughts in there. Now, I don't know how you know that it was Than who drove André to punching his boss but please promise me that you will not get revenge."

I paused to catch my breath and remembered what Gabriel told me. "Joe, in order to defeat the darkness and not become dark ourselves, we need to have a pure heart. We are filled with the Light and our motives must always be to speak the Truth and spread the Light."

Joe took several deep breaths while he held me. He stroked my hair and whispered, "I'm sorry, my angel. I didn't mean to frighten you and you are right. It was just a momentary thought."

I lifted my head and locked eyes with Joe. Tears filled my eyes but I was determined. I bit at my top lip and then whispered, "Promise me you won't put yourself in harm's way." Hot tears spilled down my cheeks.

Joe wiped at them and said in a deep, reassuring tone, "I promise, Mary. I promise I won't be a hothead and I won't be rash." Then, he laid his forehead on mine and whispered, "Please don't cry, darling. Please."

I nodded and whispered, "I would die if I lost you. Than will use you to try to get to me. You are my love, my everything." My voice cracked. "I would die if I lost you," I repeated.

Joe shook my shoulders a little and looked deep into my eyes. "Listen to me, Mary, you will never lose me! Do you hear me? I am by your side now and forever."

Overcome with emotion, Joe kissed me.
