    Cards of Sin - K. J. Dahlen
When Reporter Cheyenne Gentry gets an Instant Message she tries to ignore it, but the sender is adamant. He wants her to know he murdered someone tonight. Cheyenne thinks it’s a hoax until he tells her who he killed, a Congressman Howard Betts. He left the body on the steps of the House of Congress. The killer tells her he wants her to write his story but Cheyenne wants nothing to do with the story or the killer.
When Cheyenne confirms Howard Betts is dead she calls a friend Detective Vincent Baily.  She tells him what the killer told her. Vincent reports the murder to his Captain and Cheyenne tells them that unless she plays his game he will murder someone she’s close to. The only contact she has is through her instant message.
The next day they find another body- that of Senator Steve Hargrove. Steve was having an affair with Howard’s wife and now they are both dead. Cheyenne can’t write the story the killer wants and she tells him so but the killer insists, and to get her on board he tells her a friend of hers has paid the price. Later he sends her another picture and a message, He will continue to kill until she agrees to write his story.
Cheyenne knows she has no choice. The killer wants the world to know why he’s killing but she can’t write it the way he wants. He’s given the world no proof of any crimes these people have committed. When she asks him for a name he gives her the name Wesley.
Cheyenne puts a story about Wesley on the AP and in the middle of the night the police get a phone call from a man named Wesley Price. When Cheyenne and her friend Vincent and FBI agent Sawyer Grace go to see Wesley in New York they find a broken man. He tells them of the man who broke him. His man is Roger Coyton and everything he tells them brings them more information on the killer.
When they get back to Washington they find reports coming in about similar unsolved murders going back twenty years from different places along the Eastern coast. Each of the murders have the same signature- a playing card was found on the body. Wesley’s father Ben comes to see them and tells them the rest of the story behind the assault on Wesley and the reason why Roger became what he did.
They get a phone call from Virginia about another murder and Cheyenne, Vincent and Sawyer go there to collect the little evidence he left behind. When they get there Sheriff Dan Hitchens tells them a story of the murder they had there twelve years ago. When Cheyenne shows him a picture of their killer he confirms that it’s the same man.
They take back the evidence the killer left behind and find yet another victim waiting for them. With this new information they begin a timeline and the reports are coming in quickly. Then the killer murders a cop. He has evidence that the cop is dirty but it isn’t true. His partner tells them the dead cop just received an inheritance. Looking over the crime scene evidence Sawyer finds something that tells him who the killer really is.
Knowing who the killer is without having the proof they need to verify it frustrates them. Then Roger kidnaps Vincent and tortures him. They get to him before he’s murder but later in the hospital Roger takes Cheyenne hostage in order to get away.
He takes her to an underground shack, part of Washington’s history and after she bandages his wound he knocks her out and leaves. Where he’s going they figure out is New York to finish what he started twenty years ago.
Cheyenne figures he’s going back to murder the one man he failed to kill twenty years ago. When they get there they go to see Wesley but Wesley tells them Roger probably is at the fort they had as children. It’s on the top of the building they lived in as children. When they get there Roger is there, he’s lost his grip on reality and thinks he can wipe out twenty years of murder and mayhem by asking Wesley to forgive him.
Instead Wesley seeks revenge and in a final act he takes them both over the edge of the roof.
A year later, Cheyenne comes back to New York. She wrote Roger’s story and published her book. It’s become a best seller and she used the royalties to make Wesley’s dream come true. He wanted to open a school to train dogs for the blind.
